Department conducting investigations on a developing sinkhole along Delmas road

Department of Roads and Transport 2019/10/29 - 23:00

The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport would like to inform motorists to take extra caution when driving along the R50 Delmas Road in the Ekurhuleni.

This after the Department discovered the formation of a sinkhole/doline depression along the R50/Delmas Road during a routine maintenance.

The identified developing sinkhole is situated at approximately 6km from the R25 and R50 intersection and approximately 16 km east of the Bapsfontein.

Due to the emergency nature of the sinkhole, the Department has appointed a company to carry out detailed geotechnical investigations to assess the situation.

Upon completion of the investigation, a report will be produced and will inform the cause of action or remedial actions to be undertaken.

As a precautionary measure, the Department has installed speed reduction signages and rumble strips to ensure the safety of motorists.

It has also ensured that the steep gradient is temporarily filled for easy passage, with cracks being monitored and recorded on a daily basis.

The Department would like to thank motorists in advance for their understanding and wishes to reassure them that the safety of the road is a top priority.
