Eye care is the prevention or treatment of eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma and others. By protecting your eyes you will reduce the chances of blindness and vision loss.
In Gauteng, eye care services are provided in Community Health Centres as well as Tertiary Hospitals. However, health workers in clinics have been trained to assess and refer those with health challenges.
In all centres that provide eye care services, all the necessary tests as well as surgery if needed is free.
The centres open weekdays from 08h00 to 16h00 and no referral is required.
Patients, excluding school going children, pay a small fee for devices such as spectacles which the department does not provide but help source from affordable NGOs.
Pensioners and people with disabilities also pay but a discounted fee.
Health care workers also conduct outreach programmes to community gatherings, schools as well as old age homes amongst others where they provide free assessments and screenings.
