Malaria

Description

Malaria is a life-threatening disease that is caused by parasites carried by anopheles mosquitoes.

​There are four kinds of malaria parasites that can infect humans: 

  • Plasmodium vivax
  • Plasmodium ovale, 
  • Plasmodium  malariae
  • ​Plasmodium falciparum. 

Malaria is transmitted by blood, so it can also be transmitted through an organ transplant, a transfusion and the use of shared needles or syringes.


Tips to prevent malaria 
  • ​Talk to your doctor if you are traveling to an area where malaria is common or if you live in such an area.  You may be prescribed medication to prevent the disease.

 
How is malaria treated?

Malaria can be a life-threatening condition, especially if you’re infected with the parasite Plasmodium falciparum. 
Treatment for the disease is provided in a hospital. 
Your doctor will prescribe medication​ based on the type of parasite that you have.
