As the country wraps up Mental Health Awareness Month, the Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko will unveil the first of its kind Mental Health Museum in the province housed at Weskoppies Psychiatric Hospital in Tshwane.
The museum is part of the Gauteng Department of Health’s (GDoH) continuous efforts to create awareness and showcase the improvement of mental health services in the province. The museum building which was constructed over a century ago in 1920 is located at the main entrance of the hospital.
Stigma and discrimination continue to be a barrier to social inclusion and access to the right to care. The museum will raise awareness about mental health, mental illness and promotion of the rights and responsibilities of mental healthcare users. It will also empower the public, health workers and other stakeholders by exhibiting and showcasing how mental health services has improved in Gauteng over the years.
