The Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko has condemned the attack of a nursing staff at Helen Joseph Hospital by criminals masquerading as escorts of an injured patient.
In the early hours of Sunday, 26 February 2023 a nurse was stabbed on the abdomen by two men escorting a wounded patient at the hospital. The assailants approached the nurse who had gone outside for a comfort break and attempted to rob him of his cellphone before stabbing him at the parking lot.
MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko said that it is disgraceful that people who had come to seek help for their friend who had a stab wound on his hand, can turn and harm those meant to help them.
“We condemn this act of hooliganism and criminality in the strongest possible terms and implore the police to track down the attackers as the incident was captured on CCTV cameras,” said MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko.
Before stabbing the male nurse and attempting to rob him, the two men we unruly at the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Department. They violently demanded hospital staff to immediately attend to their friend, while they were busy with patients who came first and had more severe injuries.
The two men also argued with staff and other escorts who had accompanied other patients at the Accident and Emergency Department. One of them became too violent and slapped another escort accompanying a patient. It should be noted that security personnel at the hospital intervened and the culprits fled the scene after their attempt to rob the health worker failed.
MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko has wished a speedy recovery to the nurse who was stabbed. He is currently receiving treatment at Helen Joseph Hospital and is in a stable condition.
