The Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) has put in place contingency measures to mitigate against the water supply interruptions affecting some of its Joburg-based facilities.
Water utility companies, Rand Water and Joburg Water issued public notices advising their customers of planned water shutdown scheduled from 19:00 on Tuesday, 11 July to 05:00 on Friday, 14 July 2023.
The purpose of the planned shutdown is to complete a tie-in between the A19 and B14 with a new pipeline, installation of isolation valves, and systems upgrades at Rand Water’s Eikenhof pump station.
The supply interruption affects Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, Lenasia South Hospital, Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital, South Rand Hospital, Bheki Mlangeni District Hospital and Helen Joseph Hospital, as well as a number of clinics in Johannesburg.
All the hospitals currently have supply of water through tankers with Rahima Moosa and Helen Joseph having trucks permanently pumping water to the facilities’ reservoir and roof tanks respectively.
Helen Joseph also has a high-pressure pump to boost the water movement to the upper floors in the facility. The clinics have storage tanks and will be regularly supplied with water by Joburg Water.
The GDoH’s team of clinical managers from the affected facilities together with Hospital Services, District Health Services and Infrastructure units remain on stand-by throughout out the period of the supply interruption to provide support to the affected hospitals and clinics.
Meanwhile, services are continuing at the various health facilities, albeit with reduced pressure in some of the facilities.
