Media Statement - Update on water and power supply challenges affecting healthcare facilities 19 February 2025.pdf

Department of Health Department of Health 2025/02/18 - 22:00

The Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) wishes to provide an update on power and water supply challenges affecting provision of services at healthcare facilities.

The department is pleased to inform the public that the water supply challenges at Kopanong Hospital have been resolved. All areas of the hospital including upstairs department have access to water supply.
Meanwhile, at Weskoppies Psychiatric Hospital the municipality continues to supply electricity to 95% of the departments in the facility. Only 5% of the facility which is constituted by various sections such Occupational Therapy, Forensic Services, Social Work, Wards 35 and 37 remain affected. This is because a substation supplying power to these areas had to be isolated so that engineers can locates faults.

Contactors are onsite; however, the Department is unable to ascertain when the repair work will be complete due to the weather conditions which have not made it easy to effect the repair work.

South Rand Hospital is currently experiencing power supply interruptions as a result of an internal electrical fault that has caused the voltage cables to melt in the main power station affecting two critical areas, (theatre and X-Ray department). The contractor was able to isolate the problem area but the work to replace the damaged cables is also impacted by the constant rain.

To mitigate the impact on service delivery, ambulances for some maternity and trauma cases at South Rand Hospital that may require the use of the two services affected are diverted to Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic hospital as a temporary measure.

Our facilities have backup system for water and electricity which allows them to continue rendering services even when there are supply interruption. The Infrastructure Unit in the Department is monitoring the impact of the current incessant rain on our facilities and is providing
support to facilities.

The department appreciates the patience and understanding of the public during this period and continues to work with various municipalities and utilities for water and electricity to attend to supply interruptions.
