Despite numerous challenges that confront the Dunswart Provincial
Laundry services, the facility has consistently processed between 40 000
to 45 000 pieces of laundry daily, ensuring that patients have access to
clean linen.

The Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) continues to explore solutions
to ensure that the laundry service regain its full operational capacity as it
currently has a 75% operational output.

This facility plays a critical role in serving numerous healthcare facilities,
including Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital, Tambo Memorial
Hospital, Tembisa Hospital and 25 clinics across the province including
the Gauteng Emergency Medical Services.

Challenges that have led to a reduction in operational output include staff
shortages and the breakdown of aging machinery.

To mitigate these challenges, the GDoH has previously utilised private
laundry services to boost capacity during peak periods, particularly in
instances where there is water shortages or equipment failures. This
strategic decision highlights the commitment to ensure that patient care is
sustained.

Furthermore, Dunswart Provincial Laundry, along with Masakhane
Laundry, are included in the R50 million recapitalisation programme aimed
at upgrading laundry machinery at health facilities.

The funds have been set aside from a grant provided by the National
Department of Health for the 2025/26 financial year. This is to refurbish
and replace outdated laundry machinery in health facilities. The
investment will go a long way in improving laundry capabilities and further
enhance service delivery.

Additionally, the Department looking into strategies to enhance the staffing
complement towards maximising the full operational capacity at Dunswart
laundry services.

The GDoH assures the public that all patients receiving care in our health
facilities will continue to be provided with clean linen, which is a vital aspect
of patient care.
