The MEC for Department of Infrastructure Development and Property Management Ms. Tasneem Motara visited Setlabotjha Primary School in Sebokeng on the 14 April 2021 to conduct final inspection on the new school. The new brick-and-mortar facility is expected to replace an existing facility and includes upgrades of existing facilities.
MEC Motara was accompanied by Construction Project Manager Ms. Thato Motebang as well as the CLO, project managers from the contractor, and the DID team. The team gave an update on progress since the MEC's last visit, indicating that the project is due for completion by the end of the current calendar year.
Setlabotjha Primary School, located at the Evaton side community of Sebokeng under the Emfuleni Local Municipality, was identified as one of the schools to be upgraded to a mega school by the Department of Education.
The project includes the construction of new structures which are smart school compliant as well as alterations, renovations and conversion of existing facilities into smart classrooms, as per Gauteng Department of Education specifications. The facilities include a guard house, an admin block, parking bays for staff and visitors, new Grade R classes, science laboratories, libraries, nutritional centre, amongst other facilities.
The project manager said the scope of works consists of new education facilities and the upgrading of the existing classrooms to ensure that they are smart school compliant. The project has been divided into two phases, with the first phase focusing on the new school facilities whose completion will see all the pupils and staff members relocated into the new infrastructure. Phase two will then kick in, whereby the existing classrooms will be converted into smart classrooms.
Both project phases are all 100% completed. MEC Motara was content with the work done on the project, saying the school is ready for hand over to the client Gauteng Department of Education, in due course.
