Family members and friends of the late MEC Thuliswa Nkabinde-Khawe on Friday came in numbers to pay their last respects to one of their own.

Nkabinde-Khawe who passed away following a short illness, was laid to rest at the Meyerton Cemetery on Friday, 08 November 2019.

Gauteng Premier, David Makhura accompanied by Members of the Gauteng Executive Council, led the special category one provincial funeral in honor of the Nkabinde-Khawe.

"On behalf of the provincial government, the ANC and the Alliance, I would like to once more convey our deepest condolences to the family for the immeasurable loss sustained and incalculable pain inflicted in your hearts," said Makhura.

Premier Makhura added that despite her ailing health, MEC Nkabinde Khawe remained duly concerned about the rights of the marginalized.

"Even as she was lying on her hospital bed, she remained deeply concerned about cooperatives and NPOs that must get support from the department; the elderly who must be supported with programmes so that they can age with dignity;and people with disability who must be integrated into the mainstream of the economy," added Makhura.

He said that she was committed to running clean governance in the interest of the poor.

"Our dear sister and comrade, was a wonderful mother to her children and outstanding wife to his husband, cde JK. She brought warmth and a great sense of security into the Khawe and Nkabinde family. She was a prayer warrior and a fervent christian who combined worship with hardwork. Above all, she was a champion of the poor," added the Premier.

Nkabinde-Khawe's brother Reggie Nkabinde described his sister as a humble civil servant of the people.

"We've lost a great person and a great leader. Thuli was a very strict person. If I could talk about her, I could take the whole day. Thuli was a people's person, a servant of the people and many of you knew her as Jacob Khawe's wife. She was not just a wife to Khawe, she was a leader in her own right," added Nkabinde.

MEC Thuliswa Nkabinde-Khawe is survived by her husband Jacob, her children Tshepo, Khaya, Tebogo, Ayanda, Ketso and Naledi.
