The Gauteng Department of Health has installed at least 276 TV screens so far at 120 of its health facilities.
The screens will be playing at a central location with controlled content based on messages sourced from both provincial and national Departments of Health including Health-24 and advertisements.
Speaking at the launch of the electronic health system in Kwa-Thema, Ekurhuleni, MEC for Health, Dr Bandile Masuku said the digital platform will help the department improve the patient experience in their facilities.
"The programme will provide a platform for health care users to have access to current disease surveillance information and health facility utilisation platforms in order to influence prevention and utilisation patterns of facilities.
"It is important that the department ensure that the communities are able to utilise the clinics effectively and that the time spent in our clinics is used effectively," said MEC Masuku
The aim of the project is to empower communities through the provision of digital media to improve their own health whilst ensuring that they keep abreast with the developments within the health space.
"The project is based on the premise that on a daily basis as health care users come through the health facilities waiting to be seen by clinicians, that there will be coordinated set of digital messages ranging from health patient volumes, service delivery packages, service volumes, cooperate messages during special days by the Premier, MEC, President that will be played for the communities to see," said Dr Masuku.
The project is being executed in partnership with Aurum Institute and Media Clique.
Aurum's Managing Director, Nokwethemba Mtshali said the TV information screens will help improve health status of the Gauteng population.
"We are looking at new and innovative ways of improving our health care system to make a difference in our communities", said Mtshali.
