Gauteng MEC for  Human Settlements, Lebogang Maile says his department will blacklist contractors that do not complete housing projects.

Addressing members of the media at the Gauteng Provincial Legislature on Tuesday, on his 100 days in office, MEC Maile said the department had firm engagements with contractors to who have not finished projects to go back on site and complete their projects.

"On the issue of incomplete houses, we have had firm engagements with contractors to go back on site and complete their projects. From our side, we have made a commitment to pay all contractors within 15 days to address their concerns of late payment. We have also identified 15 projects for immediate rectification, a process which is currently ongoing," emphasised Maile.

As part of the Rapid Land Release Programme, Maile said the department was in the process of procuring service stands.

"As you may know, the Gauteng Provincial Government made a commitment in during  the State of the Province Address that there is a need for 100 000 service stands to be allocated to the people of Gauteng within the next five years. This can only be achieved if the department changes the way it procures the land," MEC Maile said.

In effort to monitor the progress made in projects, the department will introduce an Infrastructure Delivery Management System that is aimed at ensuring timeous delivery of all its human settlements projects through enhancing project management. Furthermore, he said that there were ongoing concerns over the uproot of land invasions across Gauteng.

"We have witnessed a growing scale of land invasions in the province due to land hunger, exacerbated by demagogic and populist calls by certain voices, calling on our people to invade land illegally. This has necessitated our response to deal decisively with land invasions in the province.

"We must reiterate that as the provincial government we  evict all those who have occupied land and houses illegally to ensure that we allocate houses and land to legitimate beneficiaries," said Maile.
