New breed of Child Care Workers in our institutions

Recently, a first troop of qualified Child Care Workers graduated from Monash University South Africa.

Eighteen Child Care Workers obtained Bachelor of Social Science in Child and Care Development after completing their four years of study. The graduates studies were paid by the Gauteng Department of Social Development and are employees of the department at Walter Sisulu, Mary Moodley, Emmasdal and JW Luckhoff Child and Youth Care Centres.

The elated employees said they we are grateful to the department for giving them this opportunity to advance their careers. They further said the journey was never easy as they spent sleepless nights and forfeiting weekends as they were striving for success. The graduates were aware that this chance will open more doors and motivate other colleagues to take the opportunity of being professional Child &Youth Care workers.

The department’s Institutions Directorate, Assistant Director, Mpumi Luthuli said, “Child and Youth Care Workers is a growing and developing profession.

It was declared a profession when it was allowed to register with SACSSP, by former Minister of Social Development, Bathabile Dlamini in 2014 and were expected to perform their duties at Auxiliary and Professional level”.

Luthuli added that the department should drive the profession by aligning job descriptions to suit the qualifications.​
