DID hands over newly refurbished AngloGold Ashanti Hospital

The Gauteng Department of Infrastructure Development have delivered yet another Hospital to fight Covid-19 pandemic to the community of Carletonville, a historically disadvantaged area in Merafong Local Municipality. The project is part of a provincial health infrastructure plan to fight the COVID-19 pandemic by building additional capacity at existing hospitals and other external facilities. The project includes major refurbishment of the old hospital to create additional181 ICU and High Care beds to the provincial capacity to fight the pandemic.
The official opening was led by Gauteng Premier Mr David Makhura on Friday, the 14 May 2021. He was accompanied by MEC for Infrastructure Development and Property Management Ms. Tasneem Motara who was handing over the new facility and certificate of completion and occupancy to MEC for Health Ms. Nomathemba Mokghethi.
Features of the hospital include the new upgraded radiology and pharmacy, 3 generators installed, heat pumps, medical gas equipment, reheat diffusers, medical waste centre and oxygen tanks, amongst other features.
MEC Motara spoke proudly of this investment when she officially handed over the facility in the company of community members. "As Gauteng Provincial Government we have invested R460 million for this project, 30 SMMEs local labourers were employed and 357 local participating young labourers were employed," said MEC Motara.
"It is such an honour to be here and given an opportunity by the Department of Health to deliver the AngloAshanti Hospital. This project came with a lot of pain, challenges and difficultly, it was not an easy journey but only the results count," proclaimed MEC Motara.
MEC Motara went on and thanked the DID Construction Project Manager Mr Andy Maluleke, Mr Mantoane Chiloane, Acting DDG for Health Branch Mr Realeboga Mahapa, Contractor Project Manager Ms Memory Zvomuya for a completed and a successful project.
MEC Nomathemba Mokghethi conveyed her gratitude by appreciating the new hospital and the fact that it has being given a face lift. She further stated that as a department, they have plans on how the hospital will be utilised post Covid-19 pandemic.
Premier Makhura delivered the keynote address at the event. In his speech, he acknowledged the leadership of the Merafong Local Municipality, councillors represented by the District Mayor who chairs the District Command Council. He also acknowledged AngloGold Team, Nurses present, and Merafong MMC who have done a great job on this project.
"AngloAshanti Hospital will be transferred to GPG hence the critical investment to the delivery of the project with 181 additional ICU and High Care beds to fight the Covid-19 pandemic. The hospital will not only cater for Covid-19 pandemic. We are extending health care services to the Westrand community. The facility will admit mental health care patients to give them attention and best care they deserve form the whole province," said Premier Makhura.
Premier Makhura said that during Covid-19, the province of Gauteng took a decision to build permanent structures of health care for service delivery because there were not enough health care facilities. He mentioned a few facilities that are built within the province of Gauteng, including AngloAshanti Hospital.
"New professionals are employed to manage additional beds in hospitals, and 60 nurses and doctors at AngloAshanti Hospital were recalled to assist in dealing with Covid-19 pandemic in the Merafong Local Municipality,'" said Premier Makhura.
The community was urged to take care of the hospital and not vandalise it and that Local Government must assist in taking care of all infrastructure facilities in the province.
