The Gauteng Department of Community Safety is waging a war against perpetrators of crime in schools.

Speaking at Thuto Tiro Secondary School, on Wednesday 15 January 2020, MEC Mazibuko shed light on several school safety issues affecting the community which include gender-based violence, bullying and substance abuse, and how the department would address these.

MEC Mazibuko's visit to the school in Sebokeng formed part of the Gauteng Provincial Government's back to school program.

"Our secondary schools serve as a strong foundation for learning, and they play a big role in making education systems more effective and efficient. It is for this reason that we want to ensure that schools are safe and conducive for learning.

"We also do not want our children to be the perpetrators gender-based violence. We would like to see boy children taking the lead in promoting women's rights. They should be the pioneers of a non-patriarchal, non-sexist and non-discriminatory society," said MEC Mazibuko.

She stressed the Department's resolution to introduce the "Adopt A Cop Program" in various flagged schools stating: "From today our law enforcement agencies, will conduct regular visits to schools across Gauteng. The purpose of these visits is to deal with issues such as drug abuse, gangsterism and sexual abuse in schools.

We would like to warn those that continue to run amok in our schools, that their days are numbered. It cannot be acceptable that teachers are threatened with retaliation for doing their work. We will not hesitate to arrest them."

MEC Mazibuko concluded her visit to the school by distributing dignity packs and school bags to learners.
