Hundreds of mourners flocked to the Johannesburg City Hall on Wednesday, 06 November 2019 to celebrate the life and times of MEC Thuliswa Nkabinde-Khawe.

Nkabinde-Khawe, who passed away on Friday, 01 November 2019, following a short-illness, was remembered for her courageous acts in championing the rights of the marginalized members of society.

Speaking at the memorial service, Phindile Baleni, Director General at the Office of the Premier said: "we need to be inspired by her passion to serve people and empowering young people," said Baleni.

She added that the MEC was selfless in her acts of championing key priority strategies of the Gauteng Provincial Government.

"At the time of her untimely passing she was working with her colleagues in the Executive Council to formulate a strategy to eliminate hunger and eradicate poverty in Gauteng.

"Due to ill-health, she could not attend a scheduled meeting of the Executive Council last week where she would have presented the strategy," added Baleni.

Nkabinde-Khawe's eldest daughter, Tshepo Khawe described her mother as a pillar of strength.

"She was my superwoman, our superwoman, a breadwinner for the entire family, a provider for everyone. Mama taught us to be humble, to love one another genuinely and to work hard for everything because nothing came easy. She loved her family with everything she had. She made sure that everyone was well before she could even check on herself," said Tshepo.

Nkabinde-Khawe will be laid to rest on Friday, 11 November 2019 in Veereniging.
