GPL Committee Conducts Oversight Visits to DID Projects in Westonaria

Today, the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL) Portfolio Committee on Infrastructure Development and Property Management led by the Committee Chairperson, Thulani Ndlovu conducted oversight visits at the Department of Infrastructure Development (DID) projects located in Westonaria, West Rand. The Committee was joined by the DID DDG for Education and STARS, Mmakwena Selepe, Acting Chief Director, STARS, Tshepo Marokane, our Internal Project Managers, appointed Contractors as well as stakeholders.
The DID provided the Portfolio Committee with a detailed update on project progress, challenges, and mitigation strategies for the Bekkersdal Social Integrated Facility and Simunye Secondary School.
The DID is constructing Bekkersdal Social Integrated Facility on behalf of client department, the Gauteng Department of Social Development. With an estimated budget of R82 million, the scope includes an Early Childhood Development Centre for 120 learners, an Aged Day Care Centre for 120 elderly individuals, and office accommodation for 40 social workers.
The team then proceeded to Simunye Secondary School, a mega smart school designed to accommodate 1,200 learners. The project has stalled at 66% completion with 52% expenditure. Progress has been significantly impacted by security incidents, poor contractor performance, cash flow challenges, and community disruptions.
The GPL Portfolio Committee underscored the critical importance of delivering high-quality infrastructure on time to meet the urgent needs of communities. It further reaffirmed its commitment to rigorous oversight and accountability.
