​As Cindy Khoza stands confidently before her learners at Lesego Primary School in Muldersdrift, Western Corridor, teaching, guiding, and inspiring, few would guess the extraordinary journey that brought her here.
Once a vulnerable child in need of safety and protection, Khoza has transformed her life into a story of triumph, becoming a beacon of hope, resilience and the power of Ubuntu.

A former beneficiary of the Gauteng Department of Social Development, Cindy hails from Meadowlands in Soweto. Her early life was marked by trauma, including attempted rape, neglect, and feelings of isolation that once led her to the brink of suicide. But through courage and the unwavering support of Child and Youth Care Workers, Cindy found a path forward.

Despite the pain she endured, Cindy completed her matric and went on to earn her Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) Degree from Wits University, an achievement she once thought was out of reach.

She recalls how, during her darkest moments, she struggled to find a reason to live.

“In a moment of despair, I searched for pills in my cousin’s room, hoping to escape my situation. I woke up in a hospital and was later admitted to a psychiatric ward. That’s when I told the doctors that what I really needed was love and care.”

Everything changed when she was referred to Norman House, a child and youth care centre.

“For the first time, I felt safe and cared for. I did not have to fear for my life or go hungry. The staff there believed in me. They saw my potential and gave me opportunities I never imagined.”

Khoza’s confidence blossomed. She was nominated to participate in debate programmes and served as an MC at various children’s conferences.

“I was once terrified to speak in public,” she laughs, “but those conferences gave me a voice and a sense of belonging.”

Now a qualified schoolteacher, Khoza is not only shaping young minds but also serving as living proof that with support, belief, and determination, anything is possible.
