Gauteng MEC for Health, Dr. Nomathemba Mokgethi has expressed solidarity with people living with cancer and has called on society to find creative ways to support cancer patients, whilst observing COVID-19 regulations.

This comes as the world commemorates World Cancer Day on February 4.  The day is commemorated annually, this year it is observed under the theme: "#IAmAndIWill. Together all our actions matter".

MEC Mokgethi said the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic has added isolation and disruption to people living with cancer since they normally have feelings of anxiety and fear.

She said it is important that all those suffering from cancer have solid support structure  to see them through their treatment.

"Most health care services have been disrupted due to the COVID-19 outbreak, this has added more anxiety on those living with cancer. It is for this reason we call upon relatives and caregivers of those who are living with cancer to not only show empathy towards cancer patients, but to ensure that an all-round support structure is provided," she said.

The MEC also thanked  medical and support staff that treat and manage cancer patients.

This year is a reminder of the enduring power of cooperation and collective action. When we choose to come together, we can achieve what we all wish for a healthier, brighter world without cancer.

Even though cancers are caused by various factors one third of cancer cases can be prevented by leading a healthy lifestyle.

Gauteng Health Department calls on the public to visit their local healthcare facility for regular medical screenings and check-ups.

They are also calling upon people that are taking chronic medication to collect and take their medication regularly to avoid complications and drug resistance.
