Department of e-Government 2023/09/28 - 22:00
The Department of e-Government has installed more than 100 CCTV cameras so far, across Gauteng, targeting places marked as hotspots for criminal activities.
Some of the places that received CCTV cameras include hostels. These are Johannesburg hostels: George Goch, Jeppe Hostel, Denver Hostel, MBA Hostel, Murray and Roberts Hostel, and Rethabile LTE Hostel.
The project is part of Gauteng government's initiative to fight crime using technology and aims to extend the work of Crime Prevention Wardens, commonly known as Amapanyaza. Since hostels have been identified as one of the hotspots, these cameras will greatly assist to monitor all criminal activities in the hostel neighborhood, allowing law enforcement to apprehend criminals with ease, thereby keeping residents safe and secure.
Mr. Mbatha, Induna (Chief) from Denver Men's Hostel, has expressed his appreciation to the government for the work done in providing safety to their hostel.
"I feel safer knowing that there are CCTV cameras installed in the hostel. It's reassuring to know that someone is watching over us and keeping us safe. All these criminals busy robbing people of their belongings will be caught in a second. We are grateful to the government for doing this. It will keep us safe from the criminals," said Mbatha.
Mr. Makhaye, an Induna (Chief) from Murray and Roberts Hostel, said he believes that the rate of people dying in hostels will be reduced because criminals will now be afraid to commit crimes knowing cameras are watching them.
"I think the installation of CCTV cameras was a necessary step to combat crime and maintain a safe living environment. It's good to see that government is taking action to address safety concerns in the hostel. I hope that the cameras will help deter criminals and make our community a safer place," stated Makhaye.
Induna (Chief) from LTA Khayalethu Hostel, Mr. Sefole, says that these cameras will assist in the fight against crime.
"We are tired of the criminal activities that are happening here in our hostel; people get killed and robbed almost every day here, so we are hoping that these CCTV cameras will assist in reducing crime. We want to say thank you to the government for this effort. We will work with police to ensure our place is indeed safe," said delightful Sefole.
The installation of CCTV cameras has been extended to other areas such as Alexander, Tembisa, and Diepsloot, to name a few.
