President Ramaphosa Launches Youth Month and Phase V of Youth Employment Initiative

Department of Education 2025/06/17 - 22:00

On Tuesday, 10 June 2025, in Atteridgeville, Pretoria, President Cyril Ramaphosa officially launched Youth Month and Phase V of the Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI) at Sefako Mapogo Makgatho Primary School. The President was accompanied by Minister of Basic Education Siviwe Gwarube and Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane, marking a renewed commitment to addressing youth unemployment through education-based opportunities.

The BEEI, a flagship programme under the broader Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI), aims to equip young South Africans with work experience while enhancing the country's basic education system. Since its inception during the COVID-19 pandemic, the PYEI has created over two million jobs and opportunities across the country.

Funded primarily by the Unemployment Insurance Fund's Labour Activation Programme with additional national government support, the initiative re-launches after a one-year pause and now reaches a diverse range of communities, including rural and township areas, urban centres, special-needs schools, and farms.

During his visit, President Ramaphosa praised the youth for their vital contribution to education.

"You are preparing our children for the future we all dream of. I am proud that it is you, the youth of this country, who are helping us achieve this," said President Ramaphosa.

President Ramaphosa acknowledged the country's ongoing economic challenges, and he reaffirmed the government's commitment to expanding employment.

"While we are working hard to create more permanent jobs, initiatives like this are a vital step forward. We value your contribution, and I hear about the positive impact you are making wherever I go."

He also encouraged participants to aim high in their careers, stating that he looks forward to seeing some become future leaders, even presidents.

School principal Rachel Dhlomo noted the visit fulfilled a promise Ramaphosa made in 2016 when he was still Deputy President of the Nation. One of only three schools chosen for the visit, the event had a profound impact on morale and community pride.

One teacher remarked, "The learners and staff will never be the same again."

Patricia Sebola, a recent BEEI recruit, shared her enthusiasm and said, "It's a privilege to be part of Phase 5. Meeting the President was unforgettable. As a Management Assistant graduate, I aim to learn and grow into a permanent role."

BEEI participants take on several key roles in schools, including:

  • Curriculum Assistants: Supporting foundational literacy and numeracy.
  • Reading Champions: Encouraging bilingual reading under teacher guidance.
  • ICT and Communication Assistants: Aiding digital integration in classrooms.
  • Care and Support Assistants: Promoting safe and inclusive learning environments.
  • Sport and Enrichment Assistants: Leading extracurricular activities.
  • Handy Persons: Maintaining and repairing the school infrastructure.
  • Laboratory Assistants: Enhancing science education through practical support.
  • Workshop Assistants: Supporting technical education and safety in workshops.

The Basic Education Employment Initiative continues to serve as a beacon of opportunity, addressing the dual goals of reducing youth unemployment and improving education outcomes across South Africa.
