The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) calls on all learners who wish to re-write their matric exams through the Second Chance Matric Support Programme to visit their nearest district office. Registrations close on 20 February 2023.

The programme supports learners who have not been able to meet the NSC or Senior Certificate (SC) requirements and want to re-write.

The supplementary examination, where candidates could improve their results or complete outstanding results in February and March, has been phased out and will now be written between May and June.

Candidates can only register for subjects they were registered for in any previous November examination, as far back as November 2008.

If absent with a valid reason, the Department of Basic Education says entrants may sit for exams, provided they have valid external paper marks - School-Based Assessment (SBA), Practical Assessment Tasks (PAT) and oral.

"In the case where a candidate was absent for one or more papers in the November exam with a valid reason, the candidate has to write all the papers for the registered subject(s)."

Candidates, who do not qualify to write the June NSC examination, have the following options:

  • Re-enrol for the NSC as a full-time repeater candidate at a school, provided the candidate is younger than 21.
  • Candidates need to enrol for seven subjects, including Life Orientation and have to comply with all SBA requirements.
  • Register for the Senior Certificate (SC) examination, a school leaving qualification for adults and out-of-school learners above 21 years of age.
  • Alternatively, candidates that were not successful in their examinations could consider vocational education and training.

In addition, result queries for 2022 should be submitted for investigation within 30 days after the release of results.

The department has advised candidates to ensure their names and identity numbers are reflected correctly on their statement of results and report.

Queries for required corrections should be done with the department before 30 August 2023.
