Gauteng Provincial Government is fostering an improved smart, affordable and accessible public transport even beyond the COVID-19 pandemic.
This was outlined by the Department of Roads and Transport during a media briefing held on Thursday in Ormonde, Johannesburg following the Executive Council Lekgotla that took place last week.
The department has appointed two Supervisory Firms (SMFs) for a period of 36 months to introduce an electronic monitoring system for all subsidised buses.
The SMFs started working on the 1 May 2020 and the installation of the gadgets into the buses started in June 2020. To date 1380 buses have been installed with electronic devices.
The department had introduced a Provincial Public Transport Single e-Ticket, which will solicit proposal from the market to ensure efficient and cost-effective solution that meets user expectations.
The department has also developed Road Maintenance Management System, where 60% of identified potholes are repaired within 72 hours in dry season and 7 days during the wet season.
The system was developed by Vodacom and the department will be evaluating the compliance to the specification.
with regards to taxi ranks, the department is in consultations with the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) in partnership with Gauteng Department of Economic Development(GDED) and the Office of the Premier in pursuit of Taxi economy facilitation development for the Taxi industry and the two projects are in the pipeline, in the Alex Auto Hub and facilitation of the capitalising of the Meyerton taxi contract.
