Last Friday, 11 July 2025, the Gauteng Department of Social Development, in collaboration with other government departments, hosted a Service Delivery Blitz at Dube Hostel aimed at bringing services closer to the residents.
Addressing hostel dwellers, Ward 38 Councilor Simelane said, “The blitz follows community profiling by various government departments, which confirmed that even hostel dwellers require services to change their lives for the better.”The Department’s Community Development Worker, Mathabo Theko from Central Corridor, said, “The department, through the Sustainable Livelihoods Unit, has conducted community profiling in various communities, and as a result, community members raised their concerns and challenges that required the intervention of government departments and stakeholders. Therefore, the department has deemed it necessary to facilitate information-sharing service blitzes together with other government stakeholders.”Sonwabile Zoniwe from the Department of Employment and Labor, speaking about the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF), said, “It is part of the Government’s Social Security program, which has been established to provide short-term relief to workers, subject to certain conditions, when they become unemployed or are unable to work because of illness, maternity, or adoption leave, and also to provide relief to the dependents of deceased contributors.”He said, “The employer is compelled to register with the fund as soon as business activities commence and the first worker(s) begin to work. The prescribed registration forms for commercial and domestic employers should be completed and submitted to the nearest Department of Employment and Labour offices.”Departments and nonprofit organizations in attendance included the Department of Labour, Department of Health, Road Accident Fund, SANCA Soweto, Mo Africa, Itlokomele, Joburg Zoo, and Abram Kriel Bambanani, which provides care and skills development for traumatized children and youth in need.
