Social Development Marks Women’s Month Through Athletics

On celebrating Women’s Month and promoting wellness, the Gauteng Department of Social Development Athletics Club (GDSD AC) proudly participated in the Total Sports Women’s Race on Sunday, 17 August 2025.

The annual event, which attracts thousands of participants nationwide, drew more than 12,000 women this year, all walking and running in the 5km and 10km races to raise awareness and celebrate unity, health, and purpose.

Among the participants was Sinna Musa (40), a newly joined member of the Athletics Club and a Social Auxiliary Worker at the Diepkloof Office in the Central Corridor. Encouraged by her colleagues to join, Musa embraced the club’s vision of promoting physical and mental wellbeing.

“Running has already improved my health. I don’t come from a family with many health challenges, but I know being active will improve the quality of my life and help me prevent future health problems,” Musa shared.

She also expressed gratitude for the support of her teammates during her first race and highlighted the sense of community the event fostered.

“Although it was a bit challenging at the start, the experience was amazing. It was inspiring to see so many women running together for a purpose. I enjoyed interacting and cannot wait for the next race, especially because my daughter will also be joining me,” she said with excitement.

These marathons promote healthy living, social cohesion, and women empowerment, proving that athletics is more than just a sport, it’s a lifestyle.
