Department of e-Government 2025/05/18 - 22:00

As the world commemorates World Telecommunications and Information Society Day, the Gauteng Provincial Government, through its Department of e-Government, is leading the charge in leveraging digital solutions to enhance service delivery, improve safety, and ensure seamless access to government services for its citizens.

Under the theme "Digital Innovation for Inclusive Development," this year's celebrations highlight the critical role of technology in bridging gaps and empowering communities. The Department of e-Government has been at the forefront of this digital revolution, rolling out transformative platforms such as the Gauteng Provincial Network (GPN), Gauteng Digital Platform, the Gauteng e-Panic Button, the USSD code *134*47472#, and an extensive CCTV surveillance network to combat crime and improve emergency response.

The Gauteng Digital Platform serves as a one-stop portal for citizens to access government services online, reducing long queues and paperwork. Meanwhile, the e-Panic Button, a mobile-based emergency alert system, has been instrumental in ensuring rapid police response for victims of crime, particularly women and vulnerable groups.

Additionally, the USSD code *134*47472# provides an easy, no-internet-needed solution for citizens to report service delivery issues, while the province's CCTV surveillance system has significantly enhanced crime prevention and detection in high-risk areas.

Speaking on the significance of these initiatives, Acting Deputy Director-General for ICT, Devante Maphare, emphasized that digital solutions are key to modernizing government services and ensuring accessibility for all.

"Our mandate is clear—to harness technology for the benefit of our people. The Gauteng Digital Platform, e-Panic Button, and USSD services are not just tools; they are lifelines that connect government to citizens in real-time, ensuring efficiency, safety, and transparency," said Maphare.

He added that the department remains committed to expanding digital infrastructure to underserved communities, ensuring that no one is left behind in the province's smart city vision.

"World Telecommunications Day reminds us that connectivity is a right, not a privilege. Through our e-Government initiatives, we are building a Gauteng where every citizen, regardless of location or economic status, can access services at their fingertips," Maphare stated.

As Gauteng continues to embrace the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), the Department of e-Government is exploring further innovations, including AI-driven service delivery and expanded Gauteng Provincial Network free Wi-Fi hotspots in townships to boost digital inclusion.

The province's efforts align with global telecommunications goals of fostering inclusive, secure, and sustainable digital ecosystems. On this World Telecommunications Day, Gauteng stands as a beacon of how government can use technology to uplift communities and deliver services efficiently.
