Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi embarked on another significant journey on Sunday, touring the groundbreaking solar microgrid project named "Green Village" in Alexandra.
This pioneering initiative, a first of its kind undertaken by the government, aims to provide sustainable power solutions to underserved communities. The 1-megawatt solar-powered plant is poised to supply approximately 500 households within the informal settlement.
Premier Lesufi said the government is committed to extending this transformative initiative across Gauteng.
"Our solar farm is ready to lighten up portions of Alexandra township. By the end of this political term, 14 other townships will be off the grid as we add more additional power," said Lesufi during the tour to the "Green Village,"
Accompanied by Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Mzi Khumalo and City Power technicians, Premier Lesufi witnessed the fruition of the Solar Gas Turbines project, a pivotal component of the Gauteng Energy Response Plan.
The day-long program commenced at the Tsutsumane Marasteng (PV Micro Grid) in Alexandra, underscoring the government's dedication to sustainable energy solutions.
The tour's itinerary included visiting the Johnware Substation in Newton, Johannesburg CBD, where essential upgrades to the electricity power stations were underway.
Lesufi expressed satisfaction with the progress, stating, "We are proud that, starting next month, this power station will be revitalised to deliver much-needed electricity to the people of Gauteng."
City Power, responsible for the Solar Gas Turbines project, initially slated refurbishments to commence in March.
However, the process has already commenced with replacing outdated cables and installing new valves. Additionally, plans are underway to replace the substation's engine to ensure enhanced reliability and efficiency.
The strides in powering informal settlements signify a significant step towards inclusive development and sustainable energy access in Gauteng.
