The Gauteng provincial government is encouraging people who only received their first dose of the Pfizer vaccine to return for the second and final jab.

The second jab which is given after six weeks or 42 days after the first dose is mainly for increasing antibodies in case one catches the COVID-19.

Speaking during a visit to the newly opened pop-up vaccine site at Khutsong in the Merafong municipality West Rand on Wednesday, Premier David Makhura said there are over a million people who have missed their second dose in Gauteng.

"I want to call upon over a million people across the province who has taken their first dose of Pfizer, whose days has come and passed to go and get their second jab," added Makhura.

Government urges unvaccinated people to take advantage of the Vooma Vaccination Weekend which will take place around the country from Friday.

The drive is an opportunity for all adults to be vaccinated free of charge and without appointments at public, private and pop-up vaccination sites.

People can access their second dose at any vaccination site in Gauteng and do not need to return to the site where they received their first dose.

"We want to reach more people. Ahead of the November elections, ahead of the festive season and ahead of the potential fourth wave," the Premier added.
