Department of Health 2025/06/23 - 22:00

The Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko has paid tribute to outgoing hospital board members at a special certification ceremony held on Thursday, 19 June, at the Gauteng College of Nursing's Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital Campus. The event marked the end of a three-year term served by board members across Gauteng's public hospitals, recognising their solid commitment and valuable contributions to public healthcare.

The MEC handed  certificates of appreciation and praised board members for their sacrifice, leadership, and oversight during a term that saw significant operational challenges and meeting varying community demands.

"You have been more than just board members, you have been champions of accountability, community voices, and drivers of progress in our healthcare system," said MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko.

Hospital boards, mandated by the National Health Act and other legislation, serve as advisory and oversight structures that support hospital management and advocate for community interests. Members volunteer their time to help shape healthcare delivery and address issues ranging from service quality to infrastructure needs.

During the ceremony, Nkomo-Ralehoko also paid tribute to board members who passed away during their term of service, acknowledging their selfless contribution to strengthening the province's health institutions.

Dr Gugulethu Xaba, Chairperson of the Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital Board, speaking on behalf of all hospital boards noted the visible progress made through joint efforts between the boards and the department:

"Thank you for going beyond promises and delivering the equipment our hospitals desperately needed. From upgrades in surgical theatres and Low-Level Radiation systems to improved technical capabilities, we are finally seeing real, tangible improvements."

Several boards led meaningful community outreach projects, including donations of school shoes and water supplies to local schools and hospitals, demonstrating their commitment to uplifting the communities they serve.

Hospital boards remain a crucial part of the department's accountability and governance framework.

While the current boards' term is ending, the department remains committed to continuing its partnership with communities in improving health outcomes. Further details regarding the next cycle of board appointments will be communicated in due course
