Workers’ Month Celebrated in Great Style Across the Country

In South Africa, “Workers’ Month” is observed in May, with the primary focus on 1 May, celebrated as Workers’ Day or May Day. May serves as a month commemorating the historical struggles and gains made by workers and their trade unions, as well as a reminder of the ongoing fight for fair employment standards and social justice.

It recognises the sacrifices made by workers and their organisations in the fight against apartheid, and the continued struggle for improved working conditions and equitable treatment in the workplace.

May is also celebrated in Gauteng as Africa Month, commemorating the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU). Africa Day is observed through cultural events, symposiums, and educational activities that highlight themes of African unity and progress. Public figures, educators, and community leaders use this opportunity to address pressing social issues, often drawing from a shared African identity and history. The foundation of the OAU, now the African Union (AU), represented the collective resolve of African states to support one another in the pursuit of peace, development, and integration. This united front contributed significantly to the eventual dismantling of apartheid in South Africa. In this way, Africa Day stands as a symbol of both resistance and triumph in the nation’s journey toward a more inclusive society.

In addition, the African Union has declared 2025 as the “Year of Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations.” This initiative affirms the AU’s commitment to confronting historical injustices such as colonialism, apartheid, and genocide. It builds on decades of advocacy and seeks to promote unity while establishing mechanisms for global reparatory justice.

The key objectives of the 2025 AU Theme of the Year include convening strategic dialogues and developing a framework for implementing reparations and racial healing initiatives as a flagship project; promoting policy and legislative measures to support the initiative’s success; and strengthening collaboration between civil society, governments, faith-based organisations, and the African diaspora to advance reparatory justice.

The South African Government’s theme for the month of May is “Working together to create jobs and fight poverty.” Various organisations have also expressed complementary messages and themes such as:

  • Respect labour by delivering services.
  • Honouring past struggles, demanding dignity now.
  • Stories of power, justice, and solidarity.
  • Celebrating essential workers who keep our communities thriving.

As the Gauteng Provincial Government, we proudly join the rest of the country in commemorating Workers’ Month. We recognise the critical role played by workers in building a safer and more prosperous province. Their daily sacrifices remind us that decent work, dignity, and justice must remain at the heart of our developmental agenda. Let this month serve as a renewed call to action, for government, business, labour, and communities, to continue working together in pursuit of an inclusive, just, and economically active society for all.
