Progress on Refurbishment and repair works at Laerskool Generaal Nicholas Smith
By Luyanda Mamatu
The refurbishment at Laerskool Generaal Nicholas Smith in Pretoria is progressing steadily, with significant milestones already achieved. The project, which focuses on revitalizing the school's buildings and infrastructure, is currently at 47% completion, demonstrating the Department's commitment to delivering a safe and modern learning environment.
The restorative works encompass a wide range of improvements, including structural repairs such as underpinning of the School Hall and Blocks BF and BCB, demolition and roof removal in selected classrooms and installation of roof sheeting. Onsite activities also include fixing taps, replacing tiles, upgrading toilets, ceiling repairs, electrical installations, and painting of internal walls.
Earlier delays were experienced due to asbestos scope adjustments, material delivery challenges, pending approvals, and the contractor's break, but corrective measures have been implemented to maintain progress and keep the project on track. The CLO, Ms. Jacorita Kruger, said "So far, we have completed six classrooms, and we hope to complete the school by next year February." This highlights the tangible results of the ongoing restorative work at the school.
The Department of Infrastructure Development remains closely involved in overseeing the project, ensuring all works are completed efficiently, to high standards, and within the planned timelines. These efforts will result in a fully restored, safe, and modern learning environment that supports both academic and recreational activities for school.
