The Gauteng Provincial Government, led by Premier Panyaza Lesufi, declared war on the province's growing crime at the Pass Out event on Sunday, April 30 at Giant Stadium in Soshanguve.
The first batch of 6,000 new crime prevention wardens who graduated after three months of training were unveiled at Giant Stadium in Soshanguve, and they will be on the ground, keeping the province safe from criminals.
The Premier also gave the police a fleet of 200 high-speed cars and two helicopters. This is done to support the newly formed cohort of crime prevention wardens that will be collaborating with already existing law enforcement agencies such as SAPS and the Metro Police.
In his address, the Premier spoke of the importance of technology to assist the wardens, police, and metro cops in apprehending criminals.
" Our wardens will fight crime across the province using e-policing solutions. In the next 14 days, we will be implementing high-caliber technology tools such as drones, CCTV cameras, and an e-panic button. The e-panic button will help residents who are in danger; they will just press the button, and law enforcement from our various crime operational centres will be notified immediately, and police will respond quickly," said Lesufi.
He added by stating that the crime fighters were prepared to hit the ground running, patrolling for 24 hours in each ward, and police stations across Gauteng will be fully equipped with police cars.
"The wardens will be working two shifts, the first from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the second from 6 p.m. to the next morning. We are sending a strong message to criminals. Gone are the days when people called the police station requesting protection, and the police station would say they didn't have cars. From the first of May. There will be no single police station in Gauteng without a car. We are doing this because we are tired of criminals. Criminals must know that their time is over now," added Lesufi.
The premier concluded by encouraging the wardens to fight criminals with honesty and avoid taking bribes.
"I urge all of you here to fight criminals with honesty and avoid things that would bring them disgrace Do not accept bribes," concluded Lesufi.
