Youth On The Move As Brigades Showcase Talent Across The Department

Gauteng Department of Social Development continues to empower young people by providing job opportunities through its service delivery brigade programme. Deployed across various service units, these brigades are gaining valuable experience while contributing meaningfully to communities across the province.

One standout is Awulwani Mahada, stationed at the Protea Glen Service Point in the Central Corridor. Mahada, currently studying Social Auxiliary Work and in her final year of a Supply Chain qualification at the University of Johannesburg, joined the Department in January 2024 as part of the Sawubona Mhlali initiative.

She said the experience has been eye-opening: “I assist with transport logistics and the inspection of government vehicles. At the same time, I’m gaining hands-on experience that complements my Social Auxiliary studies, my dream career.”

Another dynamic brigade member is Prudence Buhle Ndlovu, based at the Krugersdorp office in the Western Corridor. Working in the Substance Abuse Unit, she supports Social Workers in raising awareness in schools and communities.

As a Ke Moja coach, trained through the Department’s programme, Prudence actively assists clients seeking help for drug dependency. One of her most impactful moments was helping an individual access rehabilitation services and later enrolled in a skills development centre.

She holds a diploma in Edu-care and an NQF Level 4 qualification in Information Technology and is currently pursuing her Social Auxiliary qualification.

Also serving at the Krugersdorp office is Realeboga Mabote, 24, who works as a Data Capturer for the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP). Her role involves capturing and managing payment data on the ERS system for Non-Profit Organizations (NPOs) partnered with the department.

“I ensure that NPOs are registered correctly on the system and handle statistical data on the individuals they support,” she explains. Realeboga studied Public Relations at UNISA and is currently undergoing ERS system training at Walter Sisulu CYCC and Secure Care to sharpen her technical skills.

These young professionals exemplify the Department’s commitment to developing future leaders through skills transfer, mentorship, and real-world experience. Their journeys reflect both the impact and promise of youth employment in driving effective service delivery.
