Winter is a difficult season for those who are homeless. As the temperature drops, the Gauteng Social Development, Agriculture, Rural Development, and Environment, MEC Mbali Hlophe offered prepared warm soup and distributed blankets to the homeless as part of the Homeless Winter Warmer Campaign in Krugersdorp and surroundings.

Hlope said that “We do this as part of our provincial outreach programme wherein social work services are offered to the homeless citizens. We have offered social services throughout the province.”

The Winter Warmers campaign took place at Silver Right Street, Paul Kruger Hall, and Kobie Krige Street in Krugersdorp, which are the hotspots for the homeless.

The department has partnered with the various municipalities and civil society to provide shelter for the homeless with the view to restore the dignity of the homeless people in the Gauteng province. The department is currently funding 31 shelters for the homeless in the province.

The winter warmer campaign provides a temporary intervention such as provision of hot soup and a blanket to the homeless, whilst linking up beneficiaries with relevant intervention.

The campaign continues to be rolled out throughout the province.
