Construction of Barcelona Primary School in Etwatwa Making Great Progress
By Prudence Motsila
Construction of the new Barcelona Primary School in Etwatwa, Benoni is well underway and progressing steadily. Classified as a mega school due to its scale and capacity, the facility is being built in direct response to increasing learner demand across the province. Once completed, it will serve learners from Grade R through to Grade 7.
The current school operated out of mobile classrooms, implemented as a temporary solution to an urgent need. The old structure, made from non-compliant asbestos materials, did not meet current building safety regulations.
According to the Project Manager, the site is now fully secured with a palisade fence, and construction activity is ongoing. The project is at Stage 5, with excavation work already completed on some blocks. The new facility is a state-of-the-art, technology-integrated learning environment, based on a modern prototype design aligned with the Department of Basic Education's National Schools Infrastructure Norms and Standards.
The extensive scope of the project includes:
• Grade R–7 classrooms
• Administration block
• Science laboratory
• Library
• Computer and media centre
• Multipurpose room
• Art and culture room
• Technology room
• Music and dance studios
• Visual arts room
• Physical education, sports and recreation centre
• Guardhouse
• Covered refuse area
• Nutrition centre
• Two combi courts
• Sports field and additional external works
In line with government development objectives, the project is structured to support the inclusion of previously disadvantaged individuals, Affirmable Business Enterprises (ABEs), and local contractors. This is being done without compromising on quality or professional standards. The initiative also offers employment and skills development opportunities through the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), with plans for skills transfer through exit training, subject to funding approval.
Providing access to quality education starts with building infrastructure that inspires and supports learning. The demolition, decanting, and reconstruction of Barcelona Primary School stands as a shining example of the government's commitment to uplifting communities ensuring that the learners of Etwatwa have access to safe, modern, and conducive learning spaces.
