Ennerdale Youth Turns Adversity Into Opportunity

Department of Social Development 2025/05/31 - 22:00

Life often moves forward when we dare to take the first step, and 21-year-old Laiken Twala is living proof of that. Now serving as a Social Auxiliary intern at the Gauteng Department of Social Development, Twala’s inspiring journey is a powerful reminder of how support, determination, and second chances can shape a brighter future.

Twala's path hasn’t been easy. Her struggles began when her father, whom she describes as her best friend, started a new relationship. “When my father moved on, I felt pushed aside, as if I no longer had a place in his life,” she recalls. The emotional toll led to deep anger and strained family relationships.

Things came to a head in 2021 when, following several conflicts at home, her grandmother asked her to leave. It was then that Twala courageously reached out for help. Through a friend’s mother, she was connected to a local NPO in Diepkloof that supports vulnerable youth. This led to her being referred to a Social Worker from the Ennerdale Social Development Office. Recognizing her need for a safe and supportive environment, the Social Worker placed her at the Walter Sisulu Child and Youth Care Centre.

Her time at the centre proved life-changing. Arriving with emotional wounds, Twala was embraced by staff who offered a listening ear and a nurturing environment. Through programs like the Bana Pele youth camp, she learned about her rights, responsibilities, and the importance of self-awareness. Anger management sessions helped her find healthier ways to express herself, setting the stage for lasting personal growth.

With the support of the Walter Sisulu team, Twala completed her matric and gradually rebuilt relationships with her family and peers. She developed critical emotional and social skills that now serve her well, both personally and professionally.

Determined to give back, Twala approached her Social Worker, Thuli Fakude, for guidance on furthering her education. With Fakude’s help, she applied for a learnership in social auxiliary work. Her efforts paid off when she secured an 18-month internship. She now hopes to pursue further studies at an institution of higher learning.

While seeking permanent job opportunities, Twala uses her beautician skills to support herself. She remains proactive, planning to apply for initiatives such as Nasi iSpani and other career pathways that arise.

To other young people, she offers this advice: “Don’t be afraid to ask for help. You’re not alone, and your problems are not bigger than anyone else’s.” Her words reflect the wisdom gained from overcoming adversity.

Laiken Twala’s journey, from a place of pain to one of purpose, is a testament to resilience, the power of social development programs, and the potential that lies within every young person. Her story stands as a beacon of hope for Ennerdale Extension 9 and beyond.
