The Gauteng Provincial Government's multi-pronged vaccination programme, which includes pop-up mobile vaccination sites at taxi ranks, in communities, drive thru's and weekly activation of new sites is bearing fruits.

On Wednesday, 18 August 2021, the province reached the 1 million mark for fully vaccinated people. These are people who have received both doses of the Pfizer vaccine and the single dose Johnson and Johnson.

As at 18 August 2021, the province had administered 2 494 253 cumulative vaccines.  In July, the province reached the 1 million mark of doses administered per month.

Gauteng Acting Head of Department, Dr Sibongile Zungu commended all the stakeholders involved in the vaccination rollout programme, and thanked the public for its response to the vaccination programme.

"We continue together with our social partners to make inroads in our vaccination programme. We have put a plan in place to ensure we provide equitable access to the vaccine so that no one will be left behind," said Dr Zungu.

"We urge all the eligible people to present themselves at our vaccination sites, so we can ensure community and workplace survival, prevent lockdowns and other social and economic disruption so that, society, education and the economy can open up and resume at full capacity," added Dr Zungu.

Dr Zungu further made a special plea to all persons who are 60 years and older who have not presented themselves for vaccination to do so urgently.
