Department of Health 2025/04/28 - 22:00
There has been a significant progress in the establishment of a temporary Accident and Emergency Unit at Tembisa Provincial Tertiary Hospital (TPTH) after the two separate fire incidents which damaged the Accident and Emergency Unit and the main Outpatient Department (OPD).
This comes after the hospital successfully converted the old Family Medicine Unit into an alternative Casualty. As at Saturday, 26 April 2025, emergency walk-in patients were already utilising the space. With this new development, the diversion for ambulances which has been put in place will soon be lifted.
Since the fire incidents, patients continue to receive care and treatment at the hospital. TPTH has a business continuity plan which has enabled it to continue rendering health services despite the fire incidents. Arrangements have also been made to ensure that patients can also access the much-needed healthcare services at cluster hospitals and nearby clinics.
From 23 – 24 April 2025, the hospital issued medication to 679 outpatients including chronic and daily patients seen by doctors and 215 in-patients (admitted and discharged).
Maria Nkomo, an outpatient who receives her medication at TPTH was happy to receive her regime when she went for her appointment at the hospital. "I am relieved and happy that I was able to get my medication even after part of the hospital had burnt," said the elderly woman.
Families continue to visit their loved ones admitted at the hospital as normal. Olwethu Qayiso who visited her sister on Wednesday, 23 April, said that she was happy that her sister was able to be admitted at the hospital post the fire incidents.
"My sister was admitted on Tuesday, 22 April 2025 after the Accident and Emergency Unit has burned down. We were worried that she might not get assisted as she was in pain due to an operation she had. However, she was able to be assisted as an emergency walk-in," said Qayiso.
The GDoH has also deployed four mobile clinics to the hospital to service Family Medicine Unit patients as the Accident and Emergency Unit is now temporarily setup as the Family Medicine Unit.
Progress post the two fires:
- The only restricted areas remain the Accident and Emergency Department and the main OPD (Admin registration area), as a result of prohibition notices issued by the Department of Employment and Labour.
- The following areas are now cleared for use by the Department of Employment and Labour: Eye Clinic, Pharmacy, Medical Outpatient Department, Surgical Outpatient Department and scanning room. The prohibition notice for these areas has been revoked due to the air quality assessment.
- The Radiology Department has now been issued with the electricity compliance certificate (COC) clearing it for use.
- Family Medicine, alternative Building Technology (ABT) structure and Administration office areas, were never part of the prohibited areas. Nevertheless, air quality assessments were done as a safety precaution. The results showed that there is compliance with safety requirements, allaying any safety concerns.
- As a precaution, the department further appointed a service provider to check the electricity connection at the ABT. A COC has since been issued to enable the operationalisation of the ABT.
