Gauteng MEC for Health Dr Nomathemba Mokgethi visited the President Hyper in Krugersdorp on Wednesday, 23 June 2021 to assess compliance with COVID-19 health and safety protocols.

The visit forms part of government's efforts to enforce compliance with health and safety protocols in business premises to curb the spread of COVID-19 virus. Over the past two days Members of the Executive Council (MEC’s) have been on a compliance roadshow at high density areas across the province.

MEC, Nomathemba Mokgethi said they have issued fines to the stores that are not compliant with COVID-19 regulations, which will force them to comply.

“Most of the stores are non-compliant and their sanitisers are also of poor quality, and we have issued them with fines to make sure that they enforce compliance.”

The MEC said the fight against COVID-19 should start from communities. “We cannot only fight the disease in hospitals. We must now take the fight to the communities,” she said.

She added that although the province is experiencing a high number of COVID-19 infections, they have not forgotten about other health challenges in the province.

“The province continues without fail to detect and treat TB cases, with 60,2% of the TB drug resistant cases being successfully treated in the last financial year,” said Mokgethi.

The province is still leading the third wave with over 10 000 new daily infection cases. The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases as of June 23, 2021 sits at 578 488 with 498 488 recoveries and 12 382 deaths.

A total of 5842 people are currently hospitalized in both public and private facilities across the province.

“We must ensure that we slow down the infection rate and roll out the vaccines in order to contain the virus, as it is only through containment that the province can focus on getting the economy going again because this pandemic is undermining our economic reconstruction and recovery plan,” she added.
