Parents of children with disability face many challenges and understanding their experiences and acknowledging contextual influences is vital in developing intervention strategies that fit their daily realities.

This was echoed on Monday when the Gauteng Department of Social Development celebrated mothers raising children with disabilities. Hundreds of mothers of children with disabilities gathered at the Africa Tikkun Wings of Life in Diepsloot to receive a message of hope and as part of the Women’s Month commemoration and to empower them and acknowledge the good work that they continue to provide for their vulnerable children.

The Department thanked all the mothers for their tenacity and resilience in continuing to take care of children who are vulnerable against the odds.

Parents were also reminded that the only disability in life is a negative attitude and with a positive attitude, their children can reach greater heights regardless of their disability.

They were also given a platform to raise their concerns and the challenges they face every day.

Addressing mothers Portia Ngobeni said that the Department appreciates the work they do as mothers for their children. She further said government will continue to support them.
