Marriage is a holy communion that should be preserved

This assertion came to light during the Gauteng Department of Social Development Tshwane Regional Marriage Week event themed "Strengthening relationships and preserving Marriages", hosted at Soshanguve Block X Community Hall last week.

Marriage Week is a campaign which focuses on marriage as a holy institution celebrated annually from September 01 to 07 and which aims to ensure that this institution is restored in God's honour as an eternal promise. It also motivates couples into taking action, with the knowledge that a healthy marriage brings inner fulfilment and the ability to spread out to the next generation.

It further inspires couples to take a stand for marriages and to protect it with tools such as faith, knowledge, perseverance and attitude.

The Lekhula couple living with disability concurred that even though they are both physically challenged, they too have similar challenges as abled persons but they rely on the Almighty for guidance and strength. Over years they have managed to formulate a bond that help them to survive the marriage storms. This couple from Garankuwa near Pretoria has been married for 50 years, since 1969.

They encouraged other couples in attendance to stay true to themselves and have faith in God to assist with any challenges they might come across.

The couple meet while they were both doing Standard Three, currently known as Grade Five, and fell in love while using braille to communicate.

The programme started with a candle light ceremony to remember all victims and families who are affected by gender-based-violence.
