Albert Sambo's journey from frustration to fulfilment highlights the profound impact of the Extended Public Works Programme (EPWP). The 30-year-old from Walkerville credits the program for transforming his life and providing him with the tools to build a better future.
Sambo first connected with the Adonai Fellowship Community Care Centre 15 years ago, where he received daily meals and academic support. After completing his matric in 2013, Sambo was eager to continue his studies but faced financial constraints and challenges with his parents' documentation.
Despite achieving a Bachelor's pass, he found himself frustrated and unsure of his next steps. "In townships, the biggest fear is that you might end up doing the wrong things," he recalled.
In 2014, Sambo's path took a positive turn when he was asked to volunteer at the same care centre where he had once received support. His dedication and passion for helping children led to a contract as a community care worker by 2015. Though he initially hesitated,hislovefortheworkgrew,andby2019,he was selected to study as a Child and Youth Care Worker at Wilberforce Community College.
"I grabbed the opportunity with both hands, and I never looked back," he said.
Upon completing his studies, Sambo was appointed as a Child and Youth Care Worker at Adonai Fellowship Community Care Centre, where he continues to serve the children who inspired his journey. He credits the EPWP program with giving him the skills and independence to lead a fulfilling life. "This organization revived my hopes; it taught me respect and how to deal with children," he said.
Sambo now dreams of further education and personal growth, motivated by the doors the EPWP has opened for him. He encourages other youth facing similar challenges not to give up, saying, "Identify your opportunity and grab it with both hands."
The EPWP Social Sector provides work opportunities for unemployed and unskilled individuals, offering a monthly stipend while equipping them with skills and experience. This program is a life line for many young people, helping them escape poverty and build brighter futures.
