Tshwane District Hospital (TDH) delivered three bouncy babies to Covid-19 positive mothers to the delight of concerned health workers.

The hospital was recently transformed to a Covid-19 hospital to make beds available to patients suffering from the virus.

The babies, 2 boys and a girl were born from mothers who wore masks throughout labour procedure to avoid the spread of corona virus.

“Although it was reported that the pregnant mothers and babies born during CoVid-19 pandemic threatened to strain the health system and cause disruption in services, however, we are proud to say TDH had the opportunity to make these deliveries pleasant and memorable,” said Dr Sasha Nkusi, Acting CEO of the hospital.

Dr Nkusi further added that Covid-19 has given the hospital an opportunity to build capacity through skills transfer and strengthening of clinical personnel through the partnership between TDH and Steve Biko Academic hospital.

Two wards will also be fully equipped with all the necessary machinery and experienced medical staff and converted into ICU wards to accommodate patients infected with the virus.

“Dedicated midwives at the hospital are also playing a critical and supportive role to ensure that mothers are not lonely during the delivery process since the fathers are not allowed to be in the delivery room, concluded Dr Thusi.
