The Gauteng Premier, Panyaza Lesufi together with the Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni on Wednesday, 27 November handed over 201 new vehicles and 5 command centers   to the South African Police Service (SAPS).

This is in efforts to put more boots on the ground to ensure that a safer Gauteng emerges. The Johannesburg region will receive the highest number of vehicles to tackle the crimes in Johannesburg CBD as part of the CBD revitalization programme.

"I am proud to remind you Provincial Commissioner, that in the last 18 months, in your hands, we have given you 3 helicopters to support your work. We have also given you, more than 12 000 CCTV cameras for you to know what is happening in our province," said Premier Lesufi.

The Premier added that he is proud that the provincial government assisted the SAPS with more than 12 000 Gauteng Traffic Wardens deployed to give support to law enforcement agencies in the fight against crime.

"As we observe the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children which commenced   on 25 November, this year the campaign is aimed at addressing the root cause of Gender Based Violence and Femicide, looking in enhancing positive masculinity and promoting gender equality.

"We need a special intervention unit to assist us to arrest these ever increasing numbers. All other numbers are starting to be stable, GBVF are still high, but at least they are no longer growing", said Premier Lesufi.

According to the police recorded crime statistics of the Republic of South Africa, the second quarter of the 2024-25 financial year illustrates that   crime in Gauteng regions has reduced significantly. The Johannesburg District has dropped by 10,6%, the Ekurhuleni District dropped to 14,4% and Tshwane stands at 15,0% following the appointment of the Gauteng Traffic Wardens.
