Mcoco Turns Plumbing Skill Into Hope For The Future

For 25-year-old Sibusiso Mcoco from Ratanda, the ability to fix a leaking pipe is more than just a technical skill, it’s the key to a better future.

After struggling to find opportunities after matric, Mcoco seized a life-changing chance through a plumbing skills training programme offered by the Gauteng Department of Social Development in partnership with Harvest Outreach Centre. Grateful and determined, he is now using the trade to carve out a brighter path for himself and his family.

“I grabbed the opportunity with both hands,” Mcoco said. “I’ve always loved plumbing but didn’t know where to start. The training gave me the skill, the knowledge, and the confidence I needed.”

Having completed matric in 2021 without the financial means to attend university, Mcoco, like many young people in his township, found himself unemployed and frustrated. Everything changed when he came across Harvest Outreach Centre on social media in late 2024.

The plumbing programme provided hands-on training, from installing fixtures to managing waste systems, and helped him understand the full scope of the trade. “Plumbing teaches you more than just technical skills, it teaches perseverance, especially when working in tight spaces or with power tools,” he explained.

Thanks to the skills he gained, Mcoco secured a short-term maintenance job with Lesedi Local Municipality. Though the contract lasted only a few months, it boosted his confidence. “I appreciated the experience and I’m hopeful more opportunities will come,” he said.

His long-term goal? To own a plumbing company and create employment for others. “I want to be a job creator, not a job seeker,” Mcoco declared. “I believe this skill has given me the tools to build something not just for myself, but for my community.”

He encourages other young people to follow his lead.

“Instead of getting into trouble or complaining about the lack of jobs, try learning a skill like plumbing. It’s not just for men, anyone can do it. It’s something that will serve you for life.”

Today, Mcoco is proud to say he can replace sinks, fix taps, install showers, clean pipes, and carry out general maintenance. But more than that, he has gained a renewed sense of independence and purpose.

“I’m empowered now. I’ve found my passion, and I know I can make a difference, not just for myself, but for others.”
