Snake Road Sinkhole – Remedial works set to resume in February

Department of Roads and Transport 2020/01/16 - 23:00

Remedial works to the sinkhole along Snake Road (R23) in Benoni – City of Ekurhuleni, are set to resume in February 2020. The works are expected to be completed later in the year, around July.

Preliminary assessments indicated that the route needed to be closed because of a sinkhole and for the safety of motorists. Detailed geotechnical investigations to assess the situation were being carried out. The road has remained closed between Golden Drive and Pioneer Road.

The sinkhole was estimated to be four metres deep.

According to the geotechnical report, the sinkhole was caused by water ingress from damaged storm water pipe into erodible fill material.

Road users are urged to use the Tom Jones offramp when travelling towards Heidelberg and those from the south are urged to use Pioneer and turn right to Bunyan Street.

The Department apologises for the inconvenience and thanks motorists for their understanding.
