A country striving for greater equality, the Gauteng Department of Social Development (GDSD) is leading a transformative approach to eradicating poverty.

With a strong sense of moral purpose, the Department is implementing a wide range of integrated programmes aimed at creating lasting social impact.

Through key initiatives such as the War on Poverty, Bana Pele Programme, Food Relief Programme, Welfare to Work, and Youth Development interventions, GDSD is championing inclusive development and social upliftment.

The War on Poverty programme plays an important role in identifying and empowering vulnerable households.

By using detailed household profiling, the Department ensures that families receive tailored support that addresses unemployment, domestic challenges, and limited access to basic services. This targeted approach is helping restore dignity and stability in communities across Gauteng.

The total number of children living in households that reported hunger increased by  43.57% in Gauteng.

By providing school uniforms, transport subsidies, and dignity packs, the programme promotes access to education, allowing children to attend school with pride and confidence.

In doing so, it supports not only the child but the broader household by alleviating financial pressure.

Strategic partnerships with the Department of Education and community organisations that are in touch with grassroots realities strengthen its reach and effectiveness.

No developmental strategy can succeed when people are hungry. The Food Relief Programme continues to serve as an essential safety net for households facing food insecurity.

It includes the distribution of food parcels, support for community food kitchens, and nutritional support for vulnerable groups such as orphans and the elderly. In times of crisis, whether pandemic, floods, or economic downturn, this programme has proven critical.

The Welfare to Work initiative reflects a shift from dependency to empowerment, targeting young mothers and social grant recipients by equipping them with skills, entrepreneurship training, and support.

This programme confronts stereotypes about grant dependency and promotes sustainable livelihoods. It opens new pathways to self-reliance and economic participation, promoting a culture of productivity and purpose.

The department also places great emphasis on unlocking the potential of the youth in Gauteng. Through Youth Development Programmes, such as skills development campaigns, career expos, internships, and leadership training. Young people are being equipped with the tools and opportunities to lead meaningful lives and make a positive impact on their communities.

Together, these initiatives form a powerful, interconnected response to poverty. By promoting dignity, opportunity, and empowerment, GDSD is building stronger, more resilient communities and laying the foundation for a more inclusive society, where every citizen has the chance to thrive.

Ultimately, GDSD's efforts are part of a broader mission to build an inclusive and dignified society. While the government leads, real transformation requires partnerships with civil society, the private sector, and local communities.
