Department of Social Development 2022/07/24 - 22:00

The South African citizens are not distant to extending their hands of humanity, it is a daily ritual that becomes more meaningful on the 18th of July, annually.

This day was marked as Nelson Mandela International Day by the United Nations in November 2009 as a way to honour the legacy of humanity, justice, equality and human rights for all by the former president of South Africa.

The Gauteng Department of Social Development (GDSD) showed up at Mohlakeng Old Age Home in the West Rand to inspire change in the local community by cleaning, nurturing elderly wellness and committing to more changes beneficial to the elderly and the community.

Mohlakeng Old Age Home is supported and funded by GDSD in order to protect and promote wellness of the elderly and bringing them high quality social welfare services.
GDSD, Department of Environmental Affairs and the community cleaned the outside premises of the Old Age Home and the illegal dumping site situated next to the centre in Ward 22. Vacant land has been used as a dumping site by the community and it has exacerbated rat infestation in the area.

Head of Department, Thembeni Mhlongo, West Rand, Regional Director, Mantshebo Kobeli and MMC of Environmental Affairs have committed to helping the community to convert the illegal dumping site into a food garden by engaging with relevant stakeholders to remove waste, register community co-operative, barricade area and plant seedlings.

Whilst cleaning was going on, the elderly were pampered by Beauty Hub with massages, and nail and hair treatments. Zanele Dlamini (62) has been a resident of the Home for the past 12 years because of ill health. She has recovered and looks forward to spending time with her grandchildren when she leaves. “Under Mandela’s legacy I was given a house, receive a social grant and I am well looked after at this Old Age Home”.
