President Cyril Ramaphosa, Gauteng Premier David Makhura and CoGTA MEC Lebogang Maile have joined the nation in mourning the passing of City of Johannesburg Mayor, Jolidee Matong. 
Matongo, aged 46, passed away in a motor vehicle accident on Saturday. The incident occurred after Matongo had participated in a local government voter registration drive in Soweto, alongside President Ramaphosa and Premier Makhura.
President Ramaphosa said it is hard to comprehend this tragedy, given the vitality and passion with which Matongo interacted with residents of Soweto so shortly before his death.
"Nothing could prepare any of us for this sudden loss, which has deprived our nation's economic centre of its second Executive Mayor in two months.
"Mayor Matongo has been taken from us at a time when he was totally immersed in improving conditions and creating opportunities for all the people of Johannesburg and stakeholders in the metropolitan economy," the President said.
Premier Makhura said Matongo's death left him shattered. 
"His passing has left me shocked and shattered. I send my heartfelt condolences to Mrs Matongo and his children, extended family, friends and comrades," said Makhura.
He described Matongo as someone who executed his duties with a cool and calm demeanour.
Matongo was elected unopposed to this position on 10 August 2021, following the passing of his predecessor, Geoff Makhubo who succumbed to COVID-19 complications in July.
For his part, Maile said Matongo's passing is a huge blow for local government in the province.
"He was a very disciplined and committed servant, who was dedicated to the service of the people."
Johannesburg Metro Police Department spokesperson Xolani Fihla said a case of culpable homicide and reckless and negligent driving was opened at the Lenasia South police station.  ​
