All roads led to Midrand on Saturday, as sporting greats, sporting officials and guests made their way to Gallagher Convention Centre for the 10th edition of the Gauteng Sports Awards.

Glitz and glamour were the order of the day.

Tatjana Schoenmaker, the swimmer who shone brightest for Team South Africa at the Tokyo Games bagged the Sportswoman of the Year Award while Sensei Morgan Moss won the Sportsman of the Year Award.

Paralympian, Ntando Innocent Mahlangu made it as the Disabled Sportsman of the Year after he set two world records in the long jump on his way to winning the gold medal at the Tokyo Games.

Mahlangu said he was honoured to receive the award.

"Having people vote for me means a lot. I am trying to inspire the next generation coming after me. I give credit to the dedication and handwork that I put in when training," he said. 

Wheelchair tennis star Kgothatso Montjane won the Sportswoman of the Year in the Disabled Sports Category.

Former South African flyweight boxing champion Johannes "Slashing Tiger" was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Gauteng Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation MEC, Mbali Hlophe has congratulated all winners. 

"Athletes are inspirational and make a big difference in uplifting society. In this regard, they need to be recognised and rewarded. Know that your efforts as athletes, coaches and administrators do not go unnoticed, we are grateful," said Hlophe. 

The Gauteng Sports Confederation secretary-general, Yaseen Lombard said Gauteng remains the home of the champions with 90% of the gold medals bagged by Team South Africa at the Tokyo Olympics coming athletes from the province.

"If you look at the recent Olympics, 90% of the gold medals came from this province. It is good to reward them, to give them hope to carry on especially in this time of COVID-19," Lombard.
